Mindfulness
Mindfulness involves bringing one’s focus to the experience occurring in the present moment. It is a non-reactive mental state which can help enrich our lives. Meditation and other techniques are used to direct our attention through the observation of the body’s sensations, senses and emotions.
This must be done intentionally, in the present moment and with non-judgement. Techniques such as a focus on breathing and meditation are common techniques used for accessing a state of mindfulness.
Although the origins of mindfulness can be traced back to ancient times it has until recently been a relatively unfamiliar concept in western culture. Jon Kabat-Zinn, is accredited as the founder of modern day mindfulness and created mindfulness-based stress reduction (MCSR) in the late 1970s.
